James has specialised in Employment Law since 1995. He has acted for a diverse range of clients and has extensive advocacy experience across the Employment Tribunal System in England Scotland and Northern Ireland. He is the Solicitor to the Disciplinary Committee overseeing Home Office registered Forensic Pathologists.

Recent experience

  • Advising a TV station on redundancy during maternity leave.
  • Successfully defending an NDPB against a 17-day Tribunal claim for victimisation and whistleblowing.
  • Advising a Tenants Management Organisation on employment consequences of terminating a housing management contract.
  • Advising an NDPB Chief Executive on removal of underperforming senior director.
  • Advising RSL on the TUPE implications of a 15 year estate redevelopment project.
  • Advising post-LSVT RSL on sidestepping inherited redundancy terms from Local Authority by using Schedule 1 and the new age discrimination rules and designing their new redundancy process.
  • Successfully defending a construction PLC against claim for health and safety related unfair dismissal.
  • Advising RSL on pensions crystallisation under Local Government Pension scheme on planned transfer of Local Authority stock to a subsidiary and drafting TUPE indemnities.
  • Successfully removing two NDPB long-term absentees.
  • Advising a School on the removal of a person whose immigration status was terminated.
  • Advising RSL on TUPE implications of re-tendering their cleaning contract for supported housing.
  • Defending RSL against collective consultation claim by trades unions.
  • Conducting an enquiry into external allegations of professional misconduct against an NDPB employee.
  • Successfully settling a claim against a School for whistleblowing and sex discrimination.
  • Defending an RSL against unfair dismissal claim.
  • Successfully removing a publisher's senior editor.
  • Advising architects on TUPE implication of partnership change.
  • Advising RSL Remuneration Committee on retaining SMT pre-merger without breaching Good Practice Notes.

Personal interests

Outside work James has been a City Councillor and a Director of a Co-operative Development Agency in Coventry, his hometown. He is Chair of Governors of Highbury Fields School, a girls secondary school. Despite living in Highbury, he remains a Coventry City season ticket holder.
